I used a stand mixer, but this can be done by hand if you're man (or Woman) enough. It takes a LOT of kneading. You do not need a bread-maker for this recipe. If you don't have rye flour, you can substitute with more wheat flour. Bread machines make the bread-baking process easier, and you can always have fresh bread for breakfast or lunch.
